Conditions for Which Blood and Marrow
Transplantation May be Appropriate

Although blood and marrow transplantation is a relatively new therapy, it has been used successfully in the treatment of  various types of cancer and disorders of the blood. Here is a list of conditions for which blood and marrow transplantation is sometimes appropriate. 

Remember, each patient's medical care is always carefully individualized. Decisions must be based on many factors. This means that what is appropriate for one patient may not be right for another patient with the same condition. Consult with your own doctor to determine if a blood and marrow transplantation is a consideration in your care.

        Hematologic malignancies including:

    • multiple myeloma
    • acute myelogenous leukemia
    • acute lymphoblastic leukemia
    • chronic myelogenous leukemia
    • lymphoma (Hodgkin's and non-Hodgkin's)
    • chronic lymphocytic leukemia


    Solid tumors
     

    • breast cancer
    • ovarian cancer
    • testes cancer


    Nonmalignant disorders of the blood
     

    • aplastic anemia
    • paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria
    • myelodysplastic syndrome
    • myelofibrosis
    • polycythemia vera and essential thrombocythemia
    • multiple sclerosis
    • rheumatoid arthritis
    • systemic lupus erythematosus
    • myeloproliferative syndrome
