Sore Mouth and Throat

If you have a sore mouth or gums, you need to talk with your doctor to determine that the problem is a result of treatment and not related to a dental problem. You may be given medication to relieve mouth and gum pain. Your dentist may also be able to give you helpful information about caring for you mouth.

There are certain foods that may be easier to chew and swallow. You may want to try foods such as:
 

  • Milkshakes
  • Soft Fruit
  • Applesauce
  • Cottage cheese
  • Mashed potatoes
  • Macaroni and cheese
    • Pudding, custards, and gelatins 
    • Scrambled eggs
    • Oatmeal or cooked cereals
    • Mashed or pureed vegetables
    • Pureed meats
    • Liquids
    Be sure to talk with your doctor or dietitian to determine if there are certain foods you cannot have or if there are other restrictions on your diet.

    Foods you may want to avoid include:

    • Citrus fruits or juices
    • Spicy or salty foods
    • Rough, coarse, or dry foods
    Other tips that you may find helpful when you have a sore mouth or throat include:
    • Cook foods until they are soft
    • Eat small pieces
    • Using butter, thin gravies, and other sauces on foods makes swallowing easier
    • Drink liquids with a straw
    • Try eating foods cold or at room temperature
    • Tilt your head back or move it forward if swallowing is difficult
    • If you get heartburn, try sitting up or standing for about an hour after you are finished eating
    • Rinsing your mouth with water helps remove food and bacteria and promotes healing
    • Anesthetic lozenges and sprays can numb your mouth and throat so you can eat without pain
