Sore Mouth and Throat
If you have a sore mouth or gums, you need
to talk with your doctor to determine that the problem is a result of treatment
and not related to a dental problem. You may be given medication to relieve
mouth and gum pain. Your dentist may also be able to give you helpful information
about caring for you mouth.
There are certain foods that may be easier
to chew and swallow. You may want to try foods such as:
Milkshakes
Soft Fruit
Applesauce
Cottage cheese
Mashed potatoes
Macaroni and cheese

Oatmeal or cooked cereals

Mashed or pureed vegetables

Other tips that you may find helpful when
you have a sore mouth or throat include:

Cook foods until they are soft

Eat small pieces

Using butter, thin gravies, and other sauces
on foods makes swallowing easier

Drink liquids with a straw

Try eating foods cold or at room temperature

Tilt your head back or move it forward if
swallowing is difficult

If you get heartburn, try sitting up or standing
for about an hour after you are finished eating

Rinsing your mouth with water helps remove
food and bacteria and promotes healing

Anesthetic lozenges and sprays can numb your
mouth and throat so you can eat without pain
